Like journal entries, these small oil paintings on panel are memories of my travels; inspired by time spent in the landscape - camping, running, kayaking, hiking & cycling - exploring the mountains of South Carolina & North Carolina. Each depicts a particular time & place, but they are all informed by many experiences.
The Upstate of South Carolina & Western North Carolina, especially, were devastated by Hurricane Helene. These paintings are memories of the times my fiancé, Josh and our pup, Emmy dog, who is no longer with us, spent exploring the woods around us. Thinking about the roads & trails we have traveled, my heart breaks for all that has been lost. When we are able to return, I know these landscapes have been forever changed.
This road in Linville Gorge, NC leads to a campsite that is very special to me. After a heavy rain, the road fills with water and when the light is right, reflects the trees along the road. This view captures several of my obsessions: trees, fog & reflections.
